How to choose the right chlorine-free disinfectant for your hospital

19th September, 2019

Gone are the days when chlorine-based disinfectant products dominated the market for the cleaning and sterilization of the UK’s healthcare facilities.

Whilst there are a number of chlorine-based disinfectants used by NHS hospitals and trusts such as hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide, we have seen the emergence of new products on the market that does not contain chlorine and is less toxic to humans, corrosive on surfaces, and harmful to the environment.

With more product alternatives now available and increasing number of hospitals looking for chlorine-free alternatives, here are 6 key criteria that should be used when evaluating disinfectant products for your healthcare setting:

  1. Check for Efficacy

Each hospital should evaluate the key healthcare-associated pathogens most common to HCAIs and outbreaks in their specific facilities.

The product you select for example should be effective against:

  • Difficile
  • MRSA
  • Norovirus
  • H1N1
  • Bacillus Subtilis

  1. Check for Safety

It is recommended that you select a disinfectant product that will not compromise staff safety for efficacy.

By selecting a product with lower health and safety risk, staff may be more willing to use it. This will promote more consistent use and a reduction in worker-related injuries and illnesses. Staff compliance with cleaning and disinfectant policies will also help reduce the risk of HCAIs.

Healthcare facilities should also consider disinfectants that will not cause damage to common healthcare surfaces such as stainless steel, laminates, plastics and microfibre cloths. This is particularly important for those facilities still owned under PPP/PFI schemes where charges may be enforced for damages to the fabric of the building now or in the future.

  1. Check for Ease of Use

The easier a product is to use, the more likely the achievement of user compliance. To facilitate the ease of use, disinfectants should be available in multiple and convenient forms. Having a pleasant odour and safety profile are also positive influencers of staff in making a decision to follow through all policies.

  1. Check for Cost-Effectiveness

When selecting a disinfectant, it is important to look at the total cost of use compared to the cost of the disinfectant product. This evaluation should include factors such as:

  • Time for users to set up and application;
  • Storage costs;
  • Concentration levels;
  • Cost of non-compliance;
  • Costs associated with increased HCAI’s/ward closures etc.
